Halloween Night In Peachtree City

By: Jamie Fukofuka

There is no place better for children to do trick or treating than in Peachtree City. Whether you want to walk or ride on your golf cart from house to house you are sure to have a good time. The weather is typically “perfect” for those cumbersome costumes. We usually don't have to do too much bundling. The air is crisp and clean with a bright moon leading the way to doorbells in every village.

Almost every neighborhood has several homes with a light on welcoming the trick or treaters. Residence pass out a variety of goodies from regular sized candy bars to information on which church to attend on Sundays. Your kids will certainly have a full bucket of goodies to dump out and sort through once they get home.

It seems the percentage of trick or treaters and the families that stay home to pass out candy is 50/50. You will see moms and dads walking behind their children as they run from house to house. You will also see families staying home to pass out candy, but there is something special with some of those that stay home. They set out their fire pit at the end of their driveway, light it up, invite the neighbors over and gather around the flames. They will visit, laugh and enjoy handing out candy to the kids right from their campfire chair.

We all know it will be a very busy night with kids and golf carts crisscrossing from house to house. The majority of costumes seem to be dark clothing from head to toe which makes the kids hard to see at night. A great way to keep the kids visible are glow sticks attached to their buckets, through a belt loop or on a lanyard. These glow sticks are inexpensive and widely available at this time of the year from several local stores, including the Dollar Tree. If you are at home passing out candy, it would be a great idea to have several glow sticks to hand out along with the candy.

A big question after all the Halloween fun is over with is “what to do with all that candy?” Here are few ideas to consider:

-Send it to our troops overseas through these two organizations. One is www.operationgratitude.com and the other is www.operationshoebox.com

-Bake with it. Use Halloween candy as an ingredient in cakes, cupcakes, brownies and other desserts. The Betty Crocker site has some great ideas for using leftover candy. http://www.bettycrocker.com/menus-holidays-parties/mhplibrary/seasonal-ideas/leftover-candy-ideas

-Freeze it. Most Candy, especially chocolate based candy, freezes well. Place the candy in zip closure bags to enjoy later.

-Use it for fun projects with the kids. Colorful hard and gummy candies can be used to make candy necklaces. Gum drops and Lifesavers can be used for making garland to be used in your holiday decorating.

Have fun but above all BE SAFE!!

Be silent in that solitude,

Which is not lonliness-for then

The Spirits of the Dead, who stood

In life before thee, are again

In death around thee, and their will

Shall overshadow thee; be still

From “Spirits of the Dead” by Edgar Allan Poe
